BREMAP User Guide
What is BREMAP and SalvoMIE?
BREMAP (www.smartwaste.co.uk)
is a web based geographical information system (GIS) developed by BRE
and funded by Biffaward through landfill tax credits and a grant from
the Institution of Civil Engineers R&D Enabling Fund. SalvoMIE (www.salvomie.co.uk)
is a web based materials information exchange (MIE) that was originally
funded by the Department of Environment Transport and Regions and is
now being managed by Salvo. BREMAP is also accessible from www.bremap.co.uk.
How do they work?
BREMAP and SalvoMIE work together to provide an interactive network
of tools to help you define the best practicable environmental option
(BPEO) for your waste, and can be used to enhance your waste management
as a part of the SMARTWaste system. Whereas SMARTStart and SMARTAudit
identify and analyse waste generation on a site by site basis, BREMAP
and SalvoMIE will offer various waste solutions depending on the location
of your site, company, materials or products.
BREMAP and SalvoMIE provide industry with complimentary data. BREMAP
provides the location, names and addresses of reputable businesses dealing
with collection, storage, haulage, reuse, reclamation, recycling, waste
to energy and disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) wastes.
SalvoMIE provides an advertising and trading ground for a selection
of available materials. These will range from large quantities of scrap
demolition timber and recycled aggregates, to smaller quantities of
new bricks and plasterboard off-cuts left over from a building project
or shrubs and topsoil from a landscaping project.
How do I use the system?
BREMAP has both basic and advanced search engines. A basic search may
look for waste management facilities within 20 miles of your postcode,
whereas an advanced search may look for waste management facilities dealing
in timber pallets within 20 miles of your postcode but restricted to Bedfordshire
or the Midlands. Upon entering the postcode of your site, BREMAP will
present you with a map representing the different services, materials
and products available in your chosen area using coloured symbols. Brief
details of these results can either be printed out as a table or more
detailed information of a particular facility or company can be viewed
and printed out by clicking your preferred service (symbol). This simple
process has the potential to transform the management of C&D waste
as it will:
- Create firm relationships between the C&D Industry and local
reclamations, recyclers, re-processors and disposal routes
- Create markets for reuse, remanufacturing, recycling, energy recovery
and composting of materials and products
- Reduce the transportation of waste and associated nuisance
- Increase the knowledge of available waste disposal options and
materials/products available in the vicinity of your site.
Isn't this information
already available?
A myriad of databases and industry literature already exist individually
detailing landfill sites, transfer stations, incinerators, recycling
sites, reclamation companies, composting facilities and manufacturer
take-back schemes. BREMAP can encapsulate all this information into
a consistent and accessible format. Besides waste facilities, BREMAP
can identify products and materials that are also available. This part
of the database will be updated daily to ensure the latest information
on material and product availability is relayed. This service is possible
due to the links between BREMAP and SalvoMIE which provide a simple
way of finding users for materials arising from demolition, refurbishment,
new building and DIY. The materials will also appear on SalvoWEB (www.salvo.co.uk)
and BREMAP.
How do I include
my company on BREMAP?
BREMAP has been populated with information from a range of databases,
literature and journals but also from representatives of industry such
as Salvo and Institution of Demolition Engineers. Approximately 9,000
companies are already registered on the website but there is sufficient
capacity for more. Information and contact details of these companies
is verified using a business address database and commercial software,
QAS Batch and QAS Pro. If you wish to add your company to BREMAP, or
wish to be removed, please complete the registration form available
on the website or send an e-mail to bremap@bre.co.uk.
How much will it cost?
Currently, there is no charge for BREMAP as it is a component part of
the SMARTWaste system but there is a small charge for using some of
the facilities on SalvoMIE. These charges reflect the need to trade
materials and products on-line and advertise the same materials and
products using newsletters, demolition alerts etc.
